چکیده
Although exposure to the sun is recognized as the principal factor in the genesis of melanoma, this tumor also arises in areas of the skin not generally exposed to the sun, as is the case in acral lentiginous melanoma of the sole, in which the role of UV radiation would appear insignificant. Hyperkeratotic Acral Melanoma Mimicking a Common Wart
Acral melanoma is a great pretender; anything but i nfrequently, it adopts clinical faces, simulating skin conditions that make the healthcare provider diagnose it as a benign disease of the palms, soles, and ungual regions. We present a case of a hyperkeratotic acral melanoma that has been misdiagnosed and that has led to an amputation of the thumb.

IMPORTANCE The pathogenesis of acral melanoma remains unclear, even though trauma may be a predisposing factor. A study about the association of long-term physical stress with the incidence and spreading patterns through detailed anatomic mapping may be important to understand the unique features of acral melanoma. OBJECTIVES To analyze the epidemiologic and clinicopathologic characteristics ...
متن کاملDouble skin tumors with an atypical clinical picture.
The authors present a rare case of double skin tumors: acral lentiginous melanoma and metatypical carcinoma. The tumors were manifested as gradually enlarging ulcerations on the leg and sole of the foot that did not respond to standard treatment. The skin biopsies showed advanced acral lentiginous melanoma on the sole and metatypical carcinoma of the lower leg. Soon after the diagnosis was made...

Acral lentiginous melanoma affects the palms, soles, and nail apparatus. Around 3-15% of all cutaneous melanomas are located on the foot and have a poorer prognosis than melanoma elsewhere. Possible reasons for this prognostic difference may be omitting this area during routine skin check by both the patient and the physicians, in addition to misdiagnosis of melanoma as other benign skin lesion...
متن کاملMisdiagnosed, Mistreated and Delay Diagnosed Acral Melanoma: The Atypical Presentations
Background: Acral skin is the most common site of malignant melanoma in non-Caucasian population. Diagnosis in this anatomic site is often delayed because this area is not routinely examined by patients or primary physicians. Objective: To perform an earlier diagnosis underlining the importance of dermoscopy helping clinicians to differentiate this disease from the other lesions and biopsies wi...
